Globo that is Hobo

Thought I would show off a few pics of the gym I use, this is the free weights room at the Mariner Centre in Falkirk.
To be honest when I first walked in I was a bit of cry baby, oh no there’s no Olympic bars, no powercage, all standard plates, blah blah blah
I was intent on returning to Starting Strength programming but it was obvious this gym didn’t have the equipment to do this properly, once I got over my disappointment I realised what an awesome little gym it is.
First off I have trained in it with no one else around, so no hanging around to get work done, there is a distinct lack of poserish wankers at the gym, at lot of the fellas are older than me, they walk in get their shit done and walk out again, I like the atmosphere of the place, it feels like a rundown Rocky gym. The standard plates are a bit of a bitch and I still don’t know the weight of the bars I use but weight is weight at the end of the day, I’m sure plenty of people got big and strong before the advent of  Olympic weights, I may be wrong here so correct me if I am.
So what to do program wise? I only get to use the gym once a week due to time and financial constraints and I wanted the focus on getting stronger and I wanted to test myself at the same time.
The absence of a power cage meant back squatting was out, as I train alone and I need to train safe, I was planning to front squat using the squat stands but a nasty bout of hip bursitis put that out of the question. I was left with needing a compound exercise that would get me gorilla strong so I opted for the true king, the deadlift, I have been using the deadlift in conjunction with the press and weighted chins, I will often finish up with EZ bar curls, farmers walks or dumbbell snatches, to get some work in for the arms and to add a little conditioning in as well. I have adopted the rep ranges prescribed by the Strength Villain guys, that is 2x5 and then 1x AMRAP without going to failure, this means that I get work from the sets across and I get to test myself also, awesome stuff.
There it is guys, if you ever want the Hobo Gym experience from a Globo Gym look no further; it’s £4.10 a session with no induction fees, so if you are ever in the Falkirk area try it out.
